GUEST INSTRUCTORS

In our continuous quest to offer the best and most varied program to our campers, Camp Nubar this Summer will have several guest instructors during the summer sessions who will offer the programs set forth below:

SAILING COURSE - 1ST SESSION 2008
by Richard Armen Afrikian

Campers will learn both basic and intermediate level sailing techniques. The lessons, course guidelines and curriculum will be from a manual purchased through the United States Sailing Association. This program manual is the Red Cross endorsed manual for certifying and teaching small boat sailours how to sail. Our campers will learn how to sail by learning the basics of sailing while practicing and from a small classroom setting on occasion if it rains!!

We will teach them and assist them in learning how to rig a small sailboat, hoist a sail, understand basic wind & weather conditions for a fun-SAFE sail in small boats, some knot tying, PFD use (personal flotation device aka life jacket!) and some hailing signs with a basic introduction to electronic radio use off shore. “Fun” will be integral to this task for each child as that is the best way to learn and love sailing! A natural. We will also teach the basics of using a marine radio.

The goal will be to assist students to develop the necessary skills, competence and confidence to sail a small boat safely. Their own development and skills will find them the best pleasures of "fun and enjoyment in the challenge of sailing". Our more experienced students will engage in some advanced techniques and lessons where possible by learning some basic racing strategies, maneuvers and tactics where possible.

Mr. Afrikian and his family are cruisers and former part time racers off the shores of eastern Mass, NH and Maine. Rich has held various positions as an officer in the United States Power Squadron including Commander in 2000 and he was the Commodore of their family Yacht Club in Beverly MA at Jubilee Yacht Club ( www.jubileeyc.net )-004-2005). He served as the Rear and Vice Commodore prior to that for one year elected terms. He also holds the USCG Officers and vessel license for launches and he loves boating of all sorts! He is presently the appointed Fleet Captain of Jubilee Yacht Club in Beverly MA where the family is a member and they keep their boat-a CAL33.

The camp purchased a new sailboat in 2006 (custom hull # for Camp Nubar) known as an N-10 (National 10). We have named the boat “Flying Hye” and this boat is known as a one design boat and used by children and adults of all ages for sailing, racing and having fun on the water. The sail was sewn with the colors of our Armenian National Flag. Hopefully parents will view our boat in Lake Arax sailing when visiting or dropping up their children and please feel free to talk to me if interested.

Rich works for ACE-INA Insurance Companies as a Senior Risk Control Consultant in Engineering and Safety. He has been in this field for 20+ years. His 2 children attend Camp Nubar each season and they love it. See you this summer.

VISITING CLERGY

In keeping with our rich Armenian heritage and traditions, AGBU Camp Nubar celebrates Badarak every Sunday at camp either up in the mountain at our St. Shnorali Chapel or in the meadow overlooking our Lake Arax. This summer the following clergy members from the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church will be visiting Camp Nubar, in some cases for several days, to perform the church services and to spend time with the campers and counselors. Many members of our staff serve the altars of their home churches and assist the clergy at camp in the service. And of course our female staff members make a beautiful sounding choir.
